Christmas on Charles started 4 years ago with one house. Back then we were using 1 Light-O-Rama controller, which controlled about 10,000 Christmas lights. Each year, the number of LOR controllers, Christmas lights and houses have increased. Now we are currently using 7 LOR controllers, over 30,000 Christmas lights and 2 houses.
Each LOR controller has 16 channels, or on/off switches, that can be controlled. Lights are plugged into each channel and are controlled seperately from one another. Once the setup is figured out, it then can be plugged into the software and sequencing can begin.
Each song has to be sequenced and told when to turn lights on and off and which lights to use. Songs are sequenced down to the 0.05 of a second or sometimes less. So a normal 3 minute song can take about a month to sequence.
Once all the songs are sequenced, lights are up and plugged in, it's time to start the show. In order for you to hear the music, an FM Transmitter is used in the computer. This transmitter transmits the sound to an FM station (for Chirstmas on Charles it's 94.1 FM) and you can hear it from your car's radio. So you can watch the lights and hear the music from the comfort of your warm, dry car.
This year, we will have about 10 songs and a few "voiceovers" to listen to. "Voiceovers" are like mini commercials that don't sell anything. They were provided by The Demented Elf.
